Chicago Loses if Airbnb Ordinance Ignores Residents’ Concerns

Airbnb and similar platforms operate in a gray area of local oversight, and Chicago is racing to catch up. An ordinance proposed by Mayor Rahm Emanuel in January — it’s expected to move through committee on Tuesday and face a City Council vote on Wednesday — would rewrite the rules for Airbnb-type short-term rentals. Among other changes, the measure would ease requirements for the occasional rental “host” and add a surcharge that would benefit city programs for the homeless.
